MARBLE & GRANITE

Granite is a rock. This means it is made up of several minerals, including quartz, feldspar, and plagioclase. It is an igneous rock, which means that it was formed of magma deep within the earth. This makes granite very hard and durable. Granite, like quartz, can come in many colors. It can even resemble marble, with veins and clouds. Marble is a metamorphic rock. This means it was formed over millions of years from another rock. In the case of marble, the original rock was limestone. The colors of marble can range from pure white to black. Marble is often named after the place where it is found, and a famous type of white marble comes from Carrara, Italy. Marble is cool to the touch and much softer than granite. It is etched and stained very easily unless it is sealed. But because of its coolness, marble is the ideal surface for making pastry.

GRANITE 1

Marble and granite are both beautiful, highly sought-after surfacing materials. But each one does have its own attributes. Weighing the pros and cons before deciding on one or the other for your surfacing project is important. Granite is an igneous rock, which means it was once molten and formed as it cooled deep within the earth. The minerals contained in granite usually appear as small flecks throughout the stone. Marble, on the other hand, was once limestone that changed due to intense heat and pressure. This process altered its crystalline structure and introduced other minerals, which produce its characteristic veining. So, what exactly is the difference?

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MARBLE & GRANITE

Marble typically has veining whereas Granite has a more fleck-like, granular appearance but it can’t be stated as a rule. Based on its composition, natural stone has two general categories: Siliceous stone is composed mainly of silica or quartz-like particles. It tends to be very durable and easy to clean. Stones in this category are granite, slate, and sandstone. Calcareous stone is made of mainly calcium carbonate. It’s sensitive to acids, including cleaning products and foods like citrus fruits, vinegar, wine, tomatoes, etc. It requires different cleaning procedures than siliceous stone. These types of stones include marble, travertine, limestone, and onyx.

Both Marble and Granite are hard, heavy, relatively heat and scorch proof, and come in a wide array of colors and patterns. Since both are created in nature, there can be drastic variations in color and pattern. In both cases, a display sample you see in-store may not be an accurate representation of your actual purchase. (So be sure to see your slabs in person, no matter which material you select.) Both stones can be stained by oily or intensely colored foods, so both require sealing every so often (typically once a year.) Both come about through complex reactions in the earth that take millions of years, helping them achieve a look that is very much unlike any man-made material.

Another natural stone, Granite has also been used for thousands of years in buildings, bridges, and monuments. Mount Rushmore, the famous sculpture of U.S. Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, is sculpted in a granite outcrop in the hills of South Dakota. Because it contains an assortment of different minerals like feldspar, quartz, and mica, granite can come in many colors, but the most common ones are whites, grays, reds, and browns. Some granite has more of a veined look, similar to marble, but if you look closely, the color patches tend to have a more grainy, blurry look rather than distinct streaks.

Unlike marble, granite is completely opaque, so you will only see the outermost layer of the surface. Again, testing its hardness by cutting it with a knife is another way to determine whether you are looking at granite or marble. However, telling the difference between granite and quartz takes a bit more of a keen eye since neither will scratch.

GRANITE OR MARBLE WHICH IS BETTER?

As Granite & Marble are the best materials for kitchen and bathroom countertops across the United States during the last decade, homeowners have become more and more interested to know the differences between these two natural stones. Many homeowners want to know which material is suitable for kitchen countertops, what is preferred for bathroom vanity tops, what stone is good for outdoor kitchens, if marble can be used as kitchen counters, and so forth. Both granite and marble are naturally found stone materials that are quarried directly from the earth. Although marble and granite have some basic similarities, they have significant differences as well. Granite and marble have a slightly similar appearance; however, upon close examination, you can detect specific differences.

The natural color variations that appear in both granite and marble differ between the two stones. The natural processes that form granite and marble have a direct correlation to the overall strength and durability of the two materials. Although both materials will last and stay beautiful for many years in the home, it’s important to choose the correct material for the location to ensure that damage doesn’t occur.

HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MARBLE & GRANITE

Marble & granite are the materials frequently used on kitchen and bathroom countertops. Two are natural, one artificial, but with today’s manufacturing technology it can be nearly impossible to spot the difference with the naked eye. Marble is one of the most elegant natural stones in the world. It has been used for centuries to construct palaces fit for kings and statues dedicated to gods. If marble stone is free from all impurities, it will be solid white. Most marble, however, contains other minerals and can be bluish, gray, pink, yellow, or black. The colors won’t be stark, though. Any other bright and vibrant colors likely indicate that it’s human-made or that it is a natural stone mixed with other materials.

True marble will also have an unparalleled glossiness. This is often replicated in synthetic stones by adding small bits of glass and other materials, but it does not carry the same lasting shine like marble. Marble is made naturally through thousands of years of heat and pressure. The colors of other minerals will appear as veins or swirls throughout the stone, with no repeating or symmetrical patterns and at varying depths and dimensions. Marble is also somewhat translucent, often allowing you to see a few millimeters past the surface, which gives the material more depth.

The reason marble is so popular with artists and architects alike is that it is relatively soft and easy to cut and carve. The most reliable way to tell if you are looking at real marble is to test its hardness by cutting with something sharp like a knife. A real marble top will show scratches and etching over time. If you scratch a knife on a marble top (do this on the underside of the slab!) and don’t see the damage, the surface is likely granite or manufactured stone. Granite is a grainy, igneous rock that is composed of many different minerals. Marble has a softer look, due to its high concentration of calcite. Marble is mostly available in light white or pastel colors, although there are some darker slabs available. It’s hard to find a color that granite does not come in.

  • The few things that you need to keep in mind though when buying granites are:
  • The purpose and the areas where you are going to use them
  • The dimensions of the area where you are going to use them
  • The thickness which is most suitable for you. Currently, you generally get 16–18mm with most dealers. But you can also choose to order granites above that thickness.
  • The kind of surface finish you require in different areas as per your design. it may be polished, flamed or rough, leather, etc. There are several choices.
  • The wastage has to be accounted for when buying the lot. At least 10% excess is recommended. You don’t want to go back to the dealer to buy just 1 or 2 slabs later as that will significantly increase your average cost.
  • If you are buying the product for external use where it will be exposed to sunlight daily, just make sure that color enhancers are not used in that lot.

Finally, just remember that granites are products that are generally installed once or twice in the lifetime of a project. So just make sure you buy the right product and don’t compromise on this capital investment. This is not easily replaceable and you don’t want to regret having installed something you don’t like much because it was a few rupees cheaper.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MARBLE & GRANITE

The biggest difference between granite and marble is their porosity. Basically, marble is softer and more porous than granite with few exceptions like marble from Danby, VT. Granite is an igneous rock, which means it was once molten and formed as it cooled deep within the earth.

Hardness and Durability: Granite is harder than marble, so it is more resistant to chips and scratches. Both marble and granite countertops are quite durable, but ONLY if they are properly sealed every one or two years. Granite and marble are porous, so without a seal, liquids will penetrate and stain.
