What Are the Uses of Sandstone?

Sandstone was a popular building material from ancient times. It is relatively soft, making it easy to carve. It has been widely used around the world in constructing temples, homes, and other buildings. It has also been used for artistic purposes to create ornamental fountains and statues. Sandstone is a sedimentary rock formed under the oceans, lakes, and rivers. Composed of sand mineral particles (such as quartz or feldspar), this natural stone is very tough and resistant to weathering. It is a popular building and paving material from ancient times. This natural stone usually forms where sand is laid down and buried. For instance, the famous red rocks of the Grand Canyon were formed in a desert setting. The sand grains in sandstone give information about the past such as the kind of countryside that produced the sand or how far they were transported.

Depending on the mix of rock fragments, sandstone may have a wide range of colors from nearly white to nearly black, gray, brown, or red. As a landscaping and building stone, sandstone is full of character.  Outdoors, this type of natural stone is also used for cladding facades and interior walls. You can find garden benches, patio tables, or swimming pool edges. Sandstone is recognized for its natural strength, durability, and slip-resistant properties. This stone withstands the harshest climates, increasing in value and aesthetic appeal over time. One of the best examples of architecture using sandstone is Petra. In fact, the sandstone layers in Petra were the leading factor in the location and the architectural details. The White House of the United States is one of the most popular buildings using sandstone for its facade. Designed by the Irish architect James Hoban, the Presidential house is clad in pale gray sandstone.

Is Sandstone Hard or Soft Rock?

Sandstones make up about 20 to 25 percent of all sedimentary rocks. Most sandstone is composed of quartz or feldspar (both silicates) because they are the most resistant minerals to weathering processes at the Earth’s surface, as seen in the Goldich dissolution series. The edge of the gray sandstone core is relatively weak and crumbles either to the touch or with minor impact. Cores of other sandstone types fracture with sharp edges or shatter into small sharp fragments.

Crystallized Sandstones are white and sugary and, in many cases, very hard and brittle. Sandstones are made of sand grains that have been cemented together. Like sandpaper, sandstones usually have a rough, granular texture, but to really identify a sandstone you have to peer closely at its surface and look for individual sand grains. Since the grain diameters range from 2 mm all the way down to only 0.06 mm, you may need a good magnifying lens to see the sand grains in a fine-grained sandstone.

Where is Sandstone Formed?

Sandstone can be found in many places to deposits across the World. In India, there are four main sandstone deposits that can be found in Jaisalmer, Dholpur, Agra, and Kota. Jaisalmer Yellow Sandstone, found in Jaisalmer County India, has been used in many government buildings, including the Jai. There are at least 8 varieties of sandstone to be found in South Africa, but many of the quarries in this country have since closed down.

Europe is home to most of the sandstone deposits of the world, with countries such as Switzerland, Germany, and France holding the bulk of them. Germany, in fact, lays claim to having the most deposits in the entire world with around 64 varieties of the stone all being found in different areas.

What is Stone Finish?

Basically, a sedimentary rock, sandstone consists of extremely small-size minerals and grain particles. Its major constituents are quartz and feldspar that are also the most abundant minerals in the Earth’s crust. It exists in a range of colors, due to varying quantities of impurities; but the most popular sandstone shades include grey, tan, pink, yellow, brown, white, black, and red.

Brushed: This finish is so-called because the sandstone surface is treated with a metal or hard plastic brush. The process removes the soft sections of the surface while leaving behind a slightly weathered texture.

Honed: It has a relatively smooth surface. In this finish, the sandstone is treated to develop an even, smooth and flat surface. This finish is preferred for interior wall cladding and flooring. Benchtops and kitchen countertops are also made out of sandstone with this finish.

Sawn/Machine-Cut: This process utilizes diamond disc teeth to develop the finish and the resultant stone has a somewhat uneven and rough surface with tiny depressions and undulations. Sandstone tiles and pieces with a sawn-cut finish are used in driveways, pathways, patios, and paving.

Tumbled: In this finish, the sandstone surface loses its sharp edges and becomes smooth. For this, the sandstone is treated with small-size yet relatively stronger stones in a drum-like machine. The tumbling process makes the surface entirely uniform with a soft surface and edges. Cutting is not possible with this finish due to the lack of sharp and distinct edges.

Polished: The surface is brilliant and shiny with a mirror effect. It causes the most refined edge for tiles. The process of polishing is by repeated application of abrasive treatments. This type of finishing is suitable for almost all kinds of stones. This is very regular finishing, especially in Iranian stone factories. Polished tiles are used for interiors as well as benchtop and countertop, but it is not suggested for outdoor since it reduces slip resistance.
